Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art based on grappling and ground fighting techniques. The aim of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is to control and subdue a larger and stronger opponent through the use of superior techniques, leverage, and body mechanics. With an emphasis on grappling rather than striking, students are able to practice with varying levels of intensity, without the threat of serious injuries which can occur more often in martial arts focused on punching and kicking.

Traditionally, the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu student practices in a gi or kimono, a martial arts uniform similar to a judo outfit. In recent years, many schools and academies have incorporated no-gi BJJ, commonly referred to as submission wrestling, to their teaching curriculum. In no-gi BJJ, students typically wear t-shirts and shorts, instead of the typical gi.

Classes at the academy are taught all day six days a week. They feature a strength and endurance building warm-up, followed by demonstration and practice of techniques after which students engage in live wrestling with other students of their own level. It is a truly demanding workout with a strongly cerebral aspect and a sense of purpose and skill that will truly capture your imagination. Come down to the academy. Come take a look at a class or better yet, take one of the introduction classes. We are confident that Jiu-Jitsu will become one of the most cherished and enjoyable aspects of your life. It will give you a confidence, knowledge and body-dexterity and fitness that few people will ever know.

Wrestling

Wrestling’s objective is to take the opponent to the ground and then immobilize or otherwise subdue them through a range of submission holds. The sporting and competitive rules implemented throughout its history have led to an emphasis on takedowns and pins.

Judo

A predecessor of Jiu-Jitsu, Judo’s technical focus emphasises throws and takedowns over control and submissions. This is due to the competitive and sporting rules implemented throughout its history.

Budokon

Budokon is a mixed movement system which has as its core dynamic and flowing Yoga postures and transitions.  This is combined with martial arts components, animal locomotion movement and meditation.  Together they create a challenging and dynamic callisthenic workout

Coaches

Dave

David Aghion
(Head Coach – Black Belt)

David Aghion started Jiu Jitsu in his hometown of Curitiba in Brazil at the age of 12. He met Rodrigo Pimpolho when he was 17 and joined him at Gracie Barra. David was awarded his black belt in 2012 by his professor Rodrigo Fajardo.

He has also aquired a great deal of competition experience, having won the Parana State Championship 5 times, the South Brazilian Championship, and bronze at both the South American Championships and the World Championships in 2004.

Favourite Moves:
He likes to combine his half and deep half guard sweeps with passes and back takes from the top. The submissions he utilises the most are the ezekiel and triangle choke.

Rodrigo

Rodrigo Fajardo

Rodrigo Fajardo started practising Jiu-Jitsu in 2000 at Gracie Barra Curitiba under Professor Gustavo Muggitai who studied under Master Carlos Gracie and Master Helio Soneca. After starting teaching in 2003 as a Purple Belt, Rodrigo was awarded his Black Belt in 2007 and has gone on to becoming one of Jiu-Jitsu’s greatest middle heavyweight competitors.

He has competed and won many titles in his division, including the Black Belt division in the European, South American and Brazilian National Championships and is now the director of the Gracie Barra Schools in Curitiba and Ponta Grossa in Brazil.
